If fuel capacity is a concern, I'd still go DR over 2008 or newer KLR. Just buy a larger aftermarket tank for the DR.

You can bet that if I had a DR, I'd have a hefty front guard on that oil...

Roughly the same (if not a bit heavier) than a DR650...It is only 25 lbs lighter than my Gen 1 KLR650 with a full tank (410 wet). Crazy!
