One other point I do not see argued here, that I think help account for the demise of the 2strokes, in the street bikes of USA, is fuel mileage. My 2 strokes NEVER got the mileage the 4 strokes did....

Sounds like a little of both, but I'd sure keep an eye on the oil. Look for water in it from a blown head gasket. Or possible burnt valves.
