On my e model, the housing catches on a metal protrusion on the fork leg to keep it from spinning. I'd also pull and check that the cable itself didn't break.

That's the one I have. Good product. I've put maybe 20 lbs on there for some really rocky/rough riding without issue. Makes a good grab handle to lift the rear of the bike up as well.
