My understanding is that the bladder separates the gas from the oil in the internals of the reservoir. Mine had a tiny hole so the shock lost gas pressure. Definitely not related to the problem you...

Turns out the spring got knocked free; so it wasn't pulling the locking mechanism far enough back. It properly got knocked out by the pump which doesn't fit in the seat properly any more and falls...

I got a TT subframe recently; but a week after BMW installed it my shock blew a seal or something... Don't know if it was the shock or the shock/frame combo and BMW avoiding dealing with the issues...
