You probably just aren't using offline maps. Most of the map apps don't support offline maps, so your phone knows where it is, using the GPS chip, but doesn't have any map data without a cell signal....

I use GPS Kit. It's $10, but has really good offline map options, and can track your riding partners if you have cell service.

I hear ya; I've been using the Lucas 10W-50 synthetic from Skagit Powersports in mine, works pretty good but it's $14 a quart, every 400 miles. Good thing it only takes one quart!
