I think the 500 was more or a revver, probably tuned for more top end. The low end torque of the 650 makes for a nice ride, I wouldn't mess with it.

Personally, I won't bother with much on that...

Thanks for the help. Problem has been solved. Turns out it was the fuel pump. It tested over 40PSI, but that is on the edge of the bike working. After swapping with a good pump, the bike fired up....
