You can get around this by killing the Garmin Outdoor App, it will immediately restart and initiate a search for new maps and gpx-files.

No its not, it works like the zumo 350/390 units, it goes to sleep when not on power (not like the Nav IV or zumo 660 which turns off), so like a smartphone it instantly awakes when it receives power...
