Remember you should only have about half an inch of stickout. Half an inch is pretty small - you're usually almost right up to the piece considering how deep a nozzle can be.

I had an S converted SM for many years and know exactly what you mean about the handling. I don't own a Versys but I do have a Ninja 650R and have test ridden a Versys. IMO no big bike can come close...
