That would definitely be the no. one choice. But if you're cheap like me, the E-Bay extenders were only $10. They're polished aluminum and actually look better in person than in the picture above....

Yes, if you have pitting or major discoloration in the aluminum then you'll have to sand. Fortunately, my cases were fine other than the yellowed clearcoat.
