The cause of the failure hasn't been determined. Could have been input or output shaft bearings, the shipping box was fairly beat up when it arrived, not much preventing forward or rearward...

Well, I checked the easiest thing first.... and it worked! The fuel cap vent was the culprit. Blew out the vent pipe, and one-way valve, then replaced the cap but not too tightly.

Should be fine, but personally I'd rather tow a trailer w/out lights than use one. they sway and bounce a lot, and it's nerve-racking to think about the bike falling off, or falling into the vehicle.
