This is pretty much what I have for my detached garage. I also added sand and charcoal to the bucket. Has worked without issue for years.

gortex socks might be the answer

One of the best gifts I ever received was a pair of goretex socks. Made leaky shoes and boots a non issue.

In my Scotoiler I've used ATF, chainsaw bar oil and the Scotoiler oil. In my experience the Scotoiler oil flung the least, the ATF the most, but they all work. Some are messier than others.
