25 years in the tire biz gives me the ability to disagree. There are some instances where a plug patch is warranted, but for the vast majority of repairs a simple patch does the job nicely.

Has anyone here done the external fuel filter mod? My DL1000 needs to have the fuel pump addressed, and I'd much rather spend $40 and a couple of hours on the mod than hundreds on stock parts.

You're over-thinking the problem. :evil On my R90 I've always bolted the shaft on first, then slid the arm over it. It's a lot easier to tighten the shaft bolts this way, IMHO.
