When moving, at least the forward part of the fairing should be getting clean, ambient temperature air. I'd certainly place the unit out of the sun and ahead of any engine, radiator, or oil cooler.

I always seem to get better MPG in mountains, which I attribute to having to push through fewer air molecules. So, if that's true, then warmer weather (less dense air) means better MPG also.
