I'm not sure how the stator effects the ignition, as far as I'm aware, it only charges the battery. Though the repair manual says if there is an ignition problem, the stator should be checked.

As you have the carb off, check out the rubber intake boot for any cracks or if it's dried up to a solid piece of plastic. I had a crack in the intake boot which caused it to overheat.
