if you don't need sprockets (hard to imagine) - you might be able to find a chain at a 'bearing, belt, and chain' industrial place, which might be easier to find in that part of the state than a bike...

I've been down from the Bloomington/St. George road - used to be the Black Rock Rd offramp just out of the Virgin River Gorge...

Road conditions depend on weather, but overall not a bad ride.

They do turn up from time to time...if you can't use the gearbox to negotiate a lower price, pass on it and keep your eyes open.
