To cut or not to cut

Maybe of interest; I had a similar off to yours but off an MTB when the handlebar hooked a bush that leapt out into my path (I too was not paying full attention and not riding particularly hard). I...

Inspiring

Good thread. I'm 59 and have just started rehab after a bloody mountain bike get off cost me 3 broken ribs, punctured lung and broken clavicle 10 days ago. Dangerous things push bikes.

I miss...

A tough Dakar - no surprise

I heard an interview on an SA TV programme (2Wheels) with Saffer Riaan van Niekerk before the Dakar and he was clear that his team (him and Darryl Curtis) had already identified that his was going to...

Right of way

Here in the southern part of darkest Africa, about one in three drivers has a "bought" (forged/obtained illegally without a test etc) licence and has little clue about traffic lights and signs. Now...

try a new spark plug?

I bought a low hour KTM 525EXC with very similar symptons after it had been standing. I cleaned that carb every which way, even boiling that swinish pilot jet. Still wouldn't idle or pull cleanly...

Master Marquez

Hats off to Marc. As someone else posted - he got a DQ in Oz through little fault of his own (I think he was just racing; stuff the tyres!!) and didn't spit the dummy; still smiled and laughed.

Thanks for the updates and very good photo's.

Congratulations to Josh - great result. And the US of course; some legends riding and legends in the making. Good to see the MX boys multi tasking.

Changed scenario's

In another world it could have been my son so I am all for graded licencing and testing. As quite a few older members have indicated that is how we learnt, Start on a 50cc Puch moped on a farm road...

Jcr

I reckon Honda should hand over 2014 to JCR for the Dakar.

Off topic a little; I'm not sure Faria is as fast as Depres (or say, Helder) but then Cyril started as a water carrier with KTM. For sure...

Slow poison

I remember reading an oldish Dakar report by Ron Ayers (I think) in which he described Peterhansel as "slow poison" when he was still on bikes. Talent and navigational instincts aside, he'd nibble...

King Cyril

Looks like Cyril is heading for another win (don't tempt fate!) and I was of the impression he'd come through enduro to rallies.

Not quite and a very interesting cv: 1st Dakar in 2000 as a...

Ingo Waldschmidt

Ingo is a great guy and solid rider in his 3rd Dakar I think. He's helped quite a few SA riders with training to ride sand to a roadbook in Namibia.

He placed 15th when Pyndon got a top 10...

Rookie result

Andy Haydon's 1998 result was great and also that Alfie Cox finished 4th in the same year on his first Dakar; a private, self funded entry.

Interesting discussion

Fascinating stuff. Maybe a few points:

Comparing rally bikes to XC bicycles is not really valid. XC MTB is GNCC or so (that's if a S African understands GNCC). More valid is multi day stage races...
