Yup, certain. It's the transformer that's causing the drain. And some combination of that and the canbus that won't let the circuit shut down when the key's off.

That might be a good approach; if the skins can't be removed, and the lock mechanism removal isn't affected, there should be no reason to ever want to remove the plastic trim.
