It's a 2004 KTM 950,

So I must have gotten some bad advice somewhere...
For some reason I thought with the earlier models I was not to use those shims,

Weeping fork seals..

I learned a good trick some time ago, Take a business card and slide it up under the dust boot and under the fork seal and run it all the way around. It cleans those pesky seals and its soft enough...

Like everyone else said, you should have no issues. Just make sure you have proof of ownership (I would switch title in to your name), Proof of insurance, and registration. Make sure you make copies...
