Pull the fuel bowl off the bottom of the carby, probably full of crap from the tank. Clean it out thoroughly, blow air through all the nooks and crannies in the carb. Get a fuel filter/strainer...

It doesn't have the canister on a hose any more, but fits nicely in the same spot. The XR650L shock will fit as well, as I borrowed...

I wouldn't be too concerned about the black stator cover, it's probably off an xl6.

The bottom end was common to both bikes, the xl had a different bore and stroke to the xr.

Also make sure that the coil has a good earth
