the gap on my 2004 1150gsa doesn't have nearly that much of a gap. Mine has about 3/8" to 1/2"--enough to get the tip of a finger in but not much more.

GS911 is worth the price

Makes thing soooo much easier, and it can tell you what is wrong, which is completely worth the price of admission. Have you checked the foums on the GS911 site? Lots of great info there, too.

I use the stock tool

a finger through the loop in the tool and brace my thumb against the valve cover and slowly and carefully power the coil out. helps to hold the edges of the tool in the grooves on the coils.

No ridges or pitting anywhere, just surface rust. Couldn't feel anything with my finger or my nail, or with the dental pick. It cleaned up well, leaving only stains.

If the latter, I'd try to rack the box back straight-ish and get some closed cell foam...
