I think the problem is that we are seeing mostly an older generation of diesels in this country. also maybe a number of not so well maintained ones. I have seen quite a few of the newer ones up here...

I mis-read your post.
Put the bottom mount into a vise (copper jaws or the like reccomended) and there is a jam nut on the other side. loosen this and it will come right off.

Which part are you having trouble with, the linkage can put pressure on the shock if you dont take the weight off of the bike first and that will make things difficult.

I think that for now I'll try making an extension for the shock until I can afford an aftermarket Wilbers. Hopefully I can get a custom length shock to give me the correct height...
