As I recall, T176, T177 & T178 transmissions in Jeeps took either regular gear oil or ATF, depending on the year. This is the same family of gear boxes, not sure...

Think about it: "dry" is not the optimal state of rubber compound if the desired outcome is grip. I don't know if WD-40 is the best conditioner for rubber, but I would imagine it's better than soap....

You sure the fluid level is fine. If it lifts and holds pressure, then it would appear the seals are not leaking. If it's simply not reaching max height, I would think that would point to low fluid...

I doubt yours is 220v -- these Craftsman units are not that heavy-duty a machine. Unless I'm looking at it wrong, it has a standard 110v plug coiled around...
