Check your handguards

Be sure to check that your hand guards haven't slipped and aren't letting the brake lever release. I've seen it happen.

Check the coils

I have an 04 Strom and it was behaving as you described. Took a while to find the problem but it turns out that the front coil was cracked and shorting out at low RPM. Much better now.

16 K miles and no real problems. The front coil wire insulation caused it to short and run crappy. I've been very happy with the bike.
