There's no sign of the rod twisting and breaking, it just seems to have broken (brittle). There's no sign of rust further down the rod towards the clutch from what you see and the end looks fine.

The 330ohm resistor value doesn't have to be adhered to. I believe there is a range in which you can can pick your charging point w.r.t RPM. I didn't have 330ohm in my kit so I used 370. No issues.

That explains it then. Mine is a 79 with the heavy flywheel. It is short to engage, its just a whole lot more comfortable to pull to the bars if you are going to pull in for more than a split second....
