My KTMs have been WAY more reliable than any of the over 30 jap bikes I have owned. I know lots of KTM riders and they ALL say the same thing.

Look close. KTM cam chain tensioners can look fine but the ratchet teeth can be worn enough that it won't hold position. It is a fairly common problem. Manual tensioners are available.
