Actually I got home today and had a closer look...there is a hole in the upright for the knob to tighten into. Didn't see it when assembled it but noticed it on another picture. ..so problem solved....

I have a kit very similar to the Aerostich one...

I have a kit very similar to the Aerostich one and if it is the same kit the rod is very light, not stiff at all. Lots of flex. Otherwise its a decent setup in a pinch.
