Yep did check the exhaust valves and one of the valves was very slightly tighter than the other, opened that out a smidgen and they're now within spec and very close to the same gap.

Turns out the mechanic's advice was incorrect. The inlet valves are within spec. Like Steve says the bike starts easily enough that it suggested they were fine. But there still exists a popping sound...

Thanks for the suggestion, sounds like there's still a bit of an issue with yours there but disabling the ACV may be a useable workaround for now, I'll give it a shot in the morning see how she goes...

Definitely doesn't seem like it's running out of fuel to me, when that happens the engine tends to run rougher, rougher, rougher...
