Any of the detergent style degreasers can discolor aluminum if you leave it on for very long. They work well, but can hurt if left on too long--same with skin. Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses.

Try grounding the heat sink on the diode board. The mounting grommets are a very sketchy path for grounding and a little grounding wire did the trick on my non functional charging system.
