I cut everything off the cigarette power cord...

I cut everything off the cigarette power cord except the mini usb and 2 foot of cable and spliced it with the BMW cable that plugs into the CAN-Bus connector.

Well, its confirmed. I got a new Nuvi 500 and the old one was fried. Lesson learned, make sure when hardwiring your GPS that your unit is receiving only 5v not 12v. :cry
