Agreed - taking a look at what (if anything) is in the oil and filter may give you an idea as to what's going on. Doesn't take a lot of time to do, either.

When I'm on trips I'll either try for 250km before I start looking for a gas station or 200km before I start...

I use Zip Wax wash, or if parts of the vehicle are particularly greasy, I'll wash it first with some dish soap...
