While sitting on one at my dealer I noticed the same thing.
With the hand guards the bars need to lose at least an inch on each side.

Lost mine when the bike trailer flipped on the way to Alaska. Not much pavement on the AlCan in the '70s.

I think the large variance in mileage is due to riding style. If you don't steer with the throttle, which many don't then any tire is gonna last longer. I don't always ride slow enough on gravel...
