Where I live they are not plating dirt bikes anymore. It has to be a factory dualsport. Bikes like the te310 are too expensive and tall for me.

dt200 yamaha's or older dt 175- 250's are decent bikes. If your budget is $1500, buy the most original , best condition bike you can find. $1500 does not go very far as far as restoring bikes goes....

KLR's are great bikes that you can easily gravel road or quad trail. As with all dual sport bikes they are a compromise. Pretty crappy in the dirt and pretty crappy on the road. But will do both....
