My seat melted on my '08 GSA....and BMW replaced it under warranty. The replacement did not melt...at least for the couple of years I owned it with the replacement seat. Its not normal, go get it...

I've wondered the same thing...the big switch seems to act solely as a method for avoiding unintentional turn on of cruise control. Also that little paddle switch seems fragile too.
