Didn't see it mentioned but you could take your truck (minus camper) or bike through Monticello Canyon. Really cool ride with a lot of water crossing.

If you head up through Carlsbad, then I'd say route yourself west through Cloudcroft and then head up north from there through Ruidoso. Some great riding in the Lincoln National Forest.
