Looks like it happened at a good time. Replace the bearing and seal and then enjoy your trip. I wouldn't call it a failure its just like a tire showing cords. You have to replace stuff that wears out.

If you remove the main plugs and then stick a straw into the cylinder you'll be able to eyeball it and know when to expect TDC.

I'd say it should clean up nicely. I've seen pictures of projects that started out looking much worse than this and ended up looking great. It sounds like all the major stuff is good.

Make sure there is slack in all the throttle and fast idle cables.
