XR is the only way to go...

I would not even think about doing it on the V-Star. I did the road in 2006 solo, Baie Comeau to Goose Bay in two days. I did it on a GS Adv and I am glad I had the knobbys to do it.

I used Moturis in LA about a year and a half ago. I had a 1200 GS and my friends took GoldWings bikes were good. Rental time seemed to take forever, but they went the extra mile when we were done...

They will not impound your bike, at the most you will get a fine. However, you should carry proof of insurace with you. I carry mine with my ownership and license.
