Eureka!:clap Turns out the "extra" space I posted in the photo, wasn't actually extra space or the axle thread bottoming out ( I don't think! ), but was in fact the flanged portion of the axle...

That's what I've seen on other SM wheels....no spacer and the speedo set into the wheel. I'm not sure what was going on the with PO's bike, this photo clearly shows that he had the sensor mounted...
