I too have seen that happen after a good pothole or frost heave in the roads out here. Always makes me laugh. Why lower a car in an area that gets snow 5 months of the year?

Oil mist could be worn rings, cracked piston or simply over filled with oil. Hard to tell with the eye but a compression test will tell you a lot.
