Looking at my subframe, A Timesert about 1/2" in length looks ideal. The last couple threads are what locks the insert in place, so you don't want them sticking out the back of the subframe.

Agree, usually no big deal. When it happened to me, I removed the plastic cover on the side of the road and cleaned out the gunk that had built up on the seal. Never leaked again.
