Well, I checked the easiest thing first.... and it worked! The fuel cap vent was the culprit. Blew out the vent pipe, and one-way valve, then replaced the cap but not too tightly.

Should be fine, but personally I'd rather tow a trailer w/out lights than use one. they sway and bounce a lot, and it's nerve-racking to think about the bike falling off, or falling into the vehicle.
