I used an adjustable strap wrench to remove the metal ring on top of the fuel pump on my '07 GS. You can get these at Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. beats paying $70+ for the BMW tool.

The hole is the one on the upper right. The flash doesn't really show the fuel wetness very well.
