Turned out my stepper motor was fine, but the arm it was attached to was a little bent - easily straightened and no recurrence of the problem in the intervening 7k miles...

It turns out that the stepper motor was fine, but the linkage to the butterfly valve was a little bent - the part was easily straightened out and the error is now gone. :-)
