Not really, just a bad design. The front sprocket throws chain lube/dust paste to the clutch cylinder. With the updated additional dust seal and periodical cleaning should work quite a while.

The point about it being 20 year old technology isn't thar far fetched really. Look at the engine layouts from DR600 ~1985. That's not to say it's not a good engine IMO, it being still competitive...

In Russia, never a problem. Near the main roads fuel is available (~almost) always within 50 miles. In Mongolia, I'd say that 200 miles is sufficient, but only if your bike will work with 76 octane....
