After looking again I would tend to agree with SculptD. I thought that shiny bit was camera glare. Have a look at your stanchion tubes. Roll them on a flat surface to check for warpage.

Even though the head tube bearings seem suspect I'd start simple before tearing the front end apart. Is your steering stem too tight... too loose? Check your tire pressure and perhaps drain your fork...

I've got my front end apart for a rebuild. Fresh fork innards and repacked steering head bearings. Thought I'd take a look inside the front cover while the access was easy. I haven't been in here...

Your new Nikasil jugs won't fit flush to your crankcase. Unless your crankcase has the groove/cut-a-way to accept the big O-ring. Don't forget... the Nikasil barrel has a larger diameter base/ridge...
