I ended up removing the tape from the wiring...

I ended up removing the tape from the wiring harness and was able to trace the burnt wire up to a collection point where several ground wires converge (as mentioned in the referenced thread)....

Both locating pins were rusted just enough to give me a hard time. In the end, lots of heat (with a heat gun) did the trick along with a few whacks of a mallet.
