Paint or plastic coating. The plastic coating is a lot of hassle though as you need to take it apart. Paint is just a masking job though. If you paint use an etch primer first.

Good - gell batteries are good when it comes to deep discharge.

Bad - you shouldn't use a normal charger on one as the charging voltage is lower with gell....

Also check the voltage when your trying to crank. If it crashes you either have a big short in the starter circuit or most likely a bad battery.
