It is a resistor. It should not rattle, a spring should keep everything firmly connected. If the spring is not there you will have problems.

You have two pickup coils. I don't remember the ohm values but if it is 110 ohm pr. pickup, and you are measuring both in series, 232 is close. Easy mistake to make.
