I am glad that you posted this trip. I have an 08 530 EXCR and did the western portion of the TAT (Southeast Colorado to Oregon border) 95% dirt.

Everyone thinks these bikes require oil changes...

Planning a trip from L.A. to the beginning of the CDT in New Mexico.

Does anyone have any routes/suggestions? We want to avoid as much slab as possible and definitely stay off of the superslabs....

We are planning an early October ride from L.A. to Northern New Mexico.

We did the TAT from Colorado to Nevada on my 08 530. I was glad to have the extra oomph in the sand and up the passes but I would not want to have had any heavier a bike. My buddy was on his KTM...

For the time of the year you are doing the ride there is no reason to jump on the 5. There should not be too much traffic especially along the Oregon coast where it can get bogged down with...
