I once had identical symptoms. Check if one of the boots that affix the carb to the intake is torn. Earlier models had a clamp/boot shape that made it easy to tear the boot causing a vacuum leak.

Update!!! Mostly Solved!!

So, I'll start by saying that pulling the octane wire apart solved the problem.

My mechanic figured this out AFTER he went all the way into the cam-timing chain, re-checked the valves, re-checked...
