the wife and her sister just did that trip in her car a few weeks ago. she was surprised how good the road was. not very scenic, and very remote, but if the vehicle is in good shape, no problem.

dead horse is a bit pricy for bike camping, and you have to head north toward sycamore cyn to camp in the nf by the river for free. lots of nf camping everywhere if you don't have to be on the river.

(and inspection laws for bikes were worse than PA - we got it made here in AZ, they will license anything)

the scoops in the rocks are called bedrock metates (non-portable grinding stones). they are used when you are going to be in the area for awhile and there are convenient bedrocks to use.
